The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
