Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to question certain calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
